The answer to this question as to all questions that involve politicians is really quite simple. Politicians are always motivated by personal gain. That gain could take the form of bribes, promises of campaign contributions, jobs for relatives OR their perception that supporting these types of initiatives will be popular with their contstituents and help get them re-elected. VERY RARELY you encounter the most dangerous animal of all. A politician who is motivated by ideology. Fortunately they are rare and in these modern times virtually extinct.
