I think the most important issues facing our society is-
GREED. This world is getting worse daily. People really don't treat each other nice, everything is money oriented.
9/11 changed us in a way, but now we are back to our
own patterns. If we all could take 1 step back and think
first, then maybe that might help. Think of doing something
nice for someone for free. You might be surprised at the reactions.

I think the main problem facing humanity today is joblessness. This creates gangs, intimidation, drug & alcohol use, necessitating the need to have sufficient money to buy the drugs, evolving into violence against humanity, and could ultimately become the end of society as we know it.

This is very sad and frightening. The answer is not easy. It would mean educating the young people, providing healthy role models with benevolent principles and standards, fostering success ideals and making those standards desirable to the young.

A huge problem and not an easy solution.

I think, the most important issue facing humanity is ignorance. While the answer is simple, the different facets are complex. Ignorance can include towards each other, towards religion, towards stereotypes, beliefs, etc..

As far as any environmental issues, I think we build, in the US, wayy too much and not leave enough space for nature (plants AND animals) to live. Therefore, they have nowhere else to go but inland. (And then people wonder why their pets are being taken by hawks and other birds of prey! Or that, suddenly, we're seeing many more snakes, poisonous spiders, racoons, possums, etc. in our neighborhoods and wonder why!) That's my 2 cents.

Population!

If you look down the list of every other answer you get to this question and a host of things that people will not mention, they can all be traced back to overpopulation. The strain on the planet and the strain on each other is a result of there just being too many people. And that is only getting worse exponentially.

Take any conservation measures you want. Offer any aid you like. It will not be enough when there are TWICE as many people on the planet as there are now and that day is only decades away.

I disagree with everyone- i think the biggest issue facing humanity today is MONEY! - every problem is based on the mighty dollar. If it wasn't for money and social status, a lot of the hardships faced today would not exist. If you think about it, global warming and the depletion of the Ozone layer is all due to companies wanting to make money.

1. Might is Right behaviour: When powerfull nations with military hardware starts believing that they do not need other nations respect as long as they fear them because of their might..... but too much fear eventually leads to uprisings and bloodshed.

2. Ecological: when rich nations, instead of reducing pollution, think only of buying credits from poor nations so they can have credit to polute more and leave disasters for the current and future genartions

3. When fair deals and just solutions are ignored in favour of imposing pure strategic solutions leaving the humanity embroiled in continuous murderous struggles

Yes, environmental issues are important but more important is the cultural contamination in the form of discrimination and civilization conflict we have.

Man's inhumanity to man.

It is the precursor to all of the world's ills.
This is manifested in greed, murder, war, lust, poverty, injustice, indifference, envy, disasters, global warming, disease.

Poverty is one of the biggest.
Poverty breeds contempt, disease, death, and hatred.

Germs and Germ Warfare.
New and improved strains of disease.

Environmentally:
Clearcutting in the Pacific Northwest is a major problem that many people aren't aware of: http://www.commenspace.org/services/initiatives/clearcut_animations/overview.html

The amount of trash and unrecycled garbage is another major issue: http://www.earth.columbia.edu/news/2004/story01-23-04.html

Pollution by large industry and medical waste are other issues:

The increasing inventions of modern man at alarming rates, create new problems everyday, and man's ever lusting nature to create the more powerful tools and devices for human consumption leads to bigger and bigger issues.
