My son wants to play rugby, and I was wondering if there is a community rugby league or something like little league for rugby, because it is a team sport and having lessons doesn't really help if you can't play a game.

Slugby's answer is all you need to get your son going in rugby... I'd just like to add that your son will thank her in years to come for having distinguished between league (13-a-side game of British Bulldog played by northern English monkeys from places like Halifax, Wigan and Oldham) and union (a truly beautiful game that will teach your son discipline, sportsmanship and see him prosper amidst the cameraderie and brotherhood that is a rugby team all whilst ensuring that whilst he is a gentleman in later life, he's also hard as nails).

P.S. I say this out of habit - league is a fantastic game too and I learned more about one-on-one defence in one season playing league than I did in 20 years playing union.

There are a few variables here that make it a little tricky to answer. The first one is the age of your son. If he is at least high school age, then the answer is 'yes-there are teams for him to join'. If he is younger I don't know of any teams for him. The second one is if you actually meant to say "Rugby League" which is actually a different sport than "Rugby Union". When people say "rugby" in the U.S., they are almost always talking about "Rugby Union" (in Austraulia it's the other way around). You will have a hard time finding any "rugby league" teams, but there are plenty of "rugby union" teams. Sorry if I babbled too much about that distinction.

I found a couple of links to help your search: http://www.razorbacks.eparugby.org/ is a high school-aged team in East Palo Alto, but I don't know anything else about them. http://mambo.missionrugby.com/ is the men's rugby club located in Palo Alto. They may also have more information about boys' teams if you email them. It looks like southern CA has more of a program together for younger kids ( http://www.socalyouthrugby.org/ ), which is unfortunate for the Northern CA kids.

Every club that I have ever been a part of is very open to potential/new members. If you wanted to venture further out from Palo Alto, there are teams throughout the Bay Area at various levels. Hope this helps, rugby is a great game, good luck in your search.
