I am 16 weeks pregnant woth my second child. With my first I had pethidine and I really regretted it because I started talking nonesense and slurring and then I souldn't remember anything, not even the baby being put on my stomach.
What I wanted to know was was it the pethedine that made me forget everything or does that just happen anyway?

i had pethidine and it didnt do anything for the pain only make me sick,i had only gas and air with my last 3 children and felt so in control.more pain but more sense,ie i did everything my body told me to do at the right time, and breathed at the right time, its a special time and not one that should be done when high on drugs.dont get me wrong,i'm not saying i did it easily,it was bloody hard work and painful, but i felt every part of my baby being born into the world.best feeling ever,at the end of the day,its your decision,it depends on how your pain threshold is.but i understand as it is scarier 2nd time round as you know what to expect.good luck and hope all goes well.

Most likely the pethidine as women who haven't had drugs often remember the events of birth with startling clarity - try asking a great-granny about birth and I'll bet she'll remember her labours in great detail.

Pethidine is a synthetic opioid drug that affects mood and perception, as well as pain. Some women don't take in everything that's happening when they've had pethidine and find that their memory of the birth can be a bit patchy afterwards.

I had pethidine during my labour because they were concerned that it wasn't progressing and said that it would help me to sleep. Anyway it had absolutely no effect - it didn't make me feel out of it, or relieve the pain or anything. Because I had pre-eclampsia, the midwife then recommended that I have an epidural to help manage my blood pressure as well as the pain and I found that was fantastic. To be frank, I don't think I would have pethidine again but really because I must be one of those people it has absolutely no effect on.

I think it was the pethidine! I didn't have any medication during labour and I can remember everything! Must be bad not remembering. Maybe you had an allergic reaction to the drug! If you discuss your options with your doctor now, you won't have to stress about it for your whole pregnancy! Good luck!

You don't want to forgot such a memorable day like that
Good Luck

I had pethadine with the first and have regretted it ever since, it did nothing for my pain and just made me act like a nutty crazed weirdo during my labour. I will do anything to avoid it with this baby, I think I will write across my bump 'NO PETHADINE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES' really, I feel that strongly about it. It ruined my labour and I was not warned about the effects it would have on me also my little boy was born floppy and slow to breathe because they gave it too late. The only thing I remember about the whole thing is the actual birth, when I had to push him out.

It has the same effect as being drunk so it's likely. I had an epidural and I'd do it again. With gas & air I was still in too much pain and felt I had no control over what was going on. After the epidural I was even able to have a nap and because I relaxed I was fully dialated within an hour. I remember every moment of my daughters birth and was able to walk around and take a shower straight after. I'd recommend it to anyone!

i had pethidine with my first and it made me feel totally out of it, also it gave me sickness and dioreah, with my second i just stuck to gas and air and i was fine, absolutely loved giving birth, so with my third, due in 2 weeks i'm just going to try and stick to the gas and air! also i couldnt really remember anything about my first but my second is still clear in my mind.

The pethadine does put you on a bit of a 'high' and make you out of it. I vaugly remember floating after i'd had it. :o)
My advise would be try it without, bt don't not have it if you need it. It would be better in the long run to not remember much of the birth than to remember it being awful and really painfull.
Good luck!
