1st you'll need something to by-pass the copy protection built into modern DVDs. DVD43 is free and very good. It hides between your ripping software and the DVD. It starts as a yellow face in systray (beside your clock). When you put in a DVD it turns into a red devils face, give it a minute and it turns to a green smiley face. Turn on Nero or whatever and it'll rip it fine.
For a pay for application, try 1clickdvdcopy or the pro version. 1click is the easiest I've seen yet. I have a friend that is computer illiterate and uses it to rip every movie he rents. They play flawlessly every time.
As an extra, always burn and movie at 1/2 the rated speed. Example: burn 16x disks at 8x. You get better burns which stress your dvd players laser less.
Go to afterdawn.com and/or doom9.org for more info. These sites are dedicated to this. Plenty of tutorials, advice and software reviews. Both are free and have user forums for more detailed questions. Afterdawn is easier for new users but both are great sites.
Good luck and Merry Christmas!!
