I saw one advertised a couple of years ago.. but that was back in the days when an Ipod was about £300+ - what I want is a hifi system that has a built in HardDrive to play MP3s.

Is there such a thing? I know I can buy a docking station for a portable mp3 with a couple of small speakers.. but what I want is a standalone MP3 player and maybe radio and CD player

UK options only please

Yup, it's basically just a hard-drive, mixed with a Hi-Fi, the music based files are able to be played directly from the HD, even without booting up your PC for the most part.

I don't find them that useful though, let's say you have 1,000 MP3's on your HD, are you honestly going to want to scroll through them all on a Hi-Fi HD, when you could just scroll down the folder on your PC, then play them through your existing sound-system.

If you got a TV/DVD player or such near your computer with an AV input, (white/red/yellow), get a 1/4 male to audio in cable, and patch it through, you'll also get much superior sound.

If you do decide to purchase the device though, you can usually find one with 80gb of storage for around £60+, depending on the make, check your local PC World, (Dixon's group) store, they may have a few somewhere, just with the release of XP Media Center Edition, they kind of fizzled out a bit.

there is little element, for my section, in paying for an MP3 participant to behave as a HIFI... why via fact the MP3 technique compresses the sign and removes what's in actuality surplus / redeundant ideas. in spite of the undeniable fact that in case you play an MP3 over Hifi set up then you will see the ameliorations made between an MP3 & CD, or MP3 & LP. the issue is going to be looking an MP3 participant with a perfect output (electrically). there are gadgets that permit an MP3 gamers output ot be related to a cassette tape adapter.. those look to paintings ok. in spite of the undeniable fact that I even have presently come accross a gadget that plugs right into a Mp3 output socket that acts as a FM transmitter... you song a commonplace FM radio to the comparable frequency via fact the tranmsmitter and it is going to paintings ok. A eword of warning,as i found out presently in London it is puzzling to locate a spare frequency in London.. it seesm to be inundated with pirate radio & interior of reach radio hoggig very just about all of the wavelength. The transmitter is obtainable from AdvancedMP3 gamers fopr around £15
