Single women used chastity. Married women used pregnancy (Unlike Lays, you can't have more than one)

Condoms have been around a very long time and there have also been herbal concoctions women could take that would either prevent pregnancy or cause a miscarriage/abortion (the equivalent of the modern day "morning after pill").

The pull out method was also used...but generally, especially if a woman was married, it was common for nothing to be used and she'd just get pregnant as often as she got pregnant...

Thankfully times have changed and medical science has given us a number of effective options so we needn't be pregnant if we don't desire to be.
