I mean even businessmen have to give complete attention to their business, they can't let their employees to handle it. And if you would say that all the super villains are not always in a mood to conquer the world, forget about them. superheroes have to deal with other so-called real criminals.

Well, the Batman comics in the 80s (and the '90s animated series) made it clear that, while Wayne is the head of his business empire, the actual day-to-day stuff is handled by his No. 2 man, Lucius Fox (played by Morgan Freeman in the Batman Begins movie). Bruce Wayne/Batman has always tried to cultivate a reputation as someone who's never serious when it comes to business or relationships, something that comes in handy when he has to slip out of a business meeting or a date because he sees the Bat-Signal. (Besides, when you're that rich, people expect you to be eccentric and never in one place for a long time.)

As for when he sleeps.... some Batman writers have hinted that he learned ancient yoga techniques (along with all the martial arts he learned while preparing for his mission) that allow him to get a good night's sleep in just a couple of hours. So, he fights crime all night, gets home by dawn, grabs a few hours of shut eye, and then heads off to work whenever he feels like it because, hey, he's a billionaire.

The "when does he sleep" question never really bothered me... I always marveled at how one man and his butler managed to build a computer lab, crime lab, gym, trophy room, garage, airplane hangar, etc. etc., in the caves underneath a mansion by themselves. Must be one of those things we're supposed to forget in the service of a good story.

Hope this helps,
M.

This used to bother me, too, until a friend of mine who is a Batman expert explained it to me. There are several parts to this answer.

The first part is that Bruce Wayne has trained himself to go without sleep for long periods of time. In fact, there was a great story about this some years ago, about how tired he was but could not take the time to go to sleep while there were people depending on him. He is fortunate to have a metabolism that will function on little sleep. Other geniuses throughout history also did this, such as Thomas Edison. He was able to get by with 20 minute cat naps throughout the day, and so is Batman.

The second part is that much of what Bruce Wayne does is for his work as Batman. Part of the criminal investigations he does are handled by hobnobbing with other men of wealth and prestige who are supporting drugs, prostitution, money laundering and protection racketeering. This goes on simultaneously with his business activities, such as schmoozing for lucrative deals. So he does double-duty with his time and is able to reserve some for sleep.

The third part is that Batman does have certain business partners who cover for him, like Lucius Fox. Fox may not know that Wayne is Batman (in the comics, anyhow.) He may suspect that something is up. Probably he suspects that Wayne has a few extra girlfriends on the side that he doesn’t know about, or that Wayne is using some kind of drugs that he is hiding from the public. But, Fox knows what side his bread is buttered on and carries on a lot of business in Wayne’s name, proxy votes, etc.

The fourth part is that Wayne has diversified his portfolio so that he does not need to manage it hands on all the time. Crime fighting is his passion. Stocks bring in dividends no matter where you are or what you are doing.

The fifth part (and I’ll close with this one) is that Batman has developed the shallow, spoiled Bruce Wayne persona to the point where it serves as a cover. Everybody EXPECTS Wayne to be irresponsible and go jetting off to Switzerland in his private jet when he wants to go skiing, or to the Caribbean when he wants to go snorkeling. He is ‘spoiled rich’. So nobody is surprised when Bruce Wayne shows up yawning at the office at coffee break time. They don’t realize he was up till four AM and just got three hours sleep.

While I agree with you in principle that businessmen should give their business their full attention, for Batman, crime fighting is his business, and managing Bruce Wayne’s money takes second priority.

Bruce Wayne is seen somewhat as a Playboy. Prob shows up to WayneCorp at noon and out by three - does his playboy wining and dining till 9 then fights crime from 10 til 5am - sleeps from 5-11 - a solid 6 hours...

He catches some sleep when he wants to. He can leave his businness to his board for a few days which is what he probably does. This is probably the main way he catches some sleep durning the week. If not he can always fall asleep in his office and lock the door now who doesn't do that now and again.

Shhh... you aren't supposed to think about that. It's a major hole in the plot.

If the bat signal goes on, and Batman is asleep, I guess the townspeople have to handle the problem on their own. I doubt that Alfred stays up all night to let him know when the signal goes on.

Actually, I think Bruce Wayne delegates business to the max. His actual job is to be a playboy.

Well, he isn't needed EVERY night. That's why they have the Bat Spotlight; so they can summon him when needed. He probably gets more sleep than we do.
