Everytime I download a game to play it says the application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\DSOUND.DLL is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

I download them from yahoo and realarcade. It wont let me window media player files either. I tried fixing it and it wont let me play *.mid files. I don't know what happened but I think I'm going to get my dad to reformat it. It brand new as of last year and we have Nortons antivirus and spysweeper on it.

It sounds like something has overwritten the original DSOUND.DLL or one of it's components with an older version.

Try these 4 things. Try 1-3, if these dont fix it, move on to 4.

1st-Make sure that all windows updates are downloaded and installed.
2nd-Un-install and re-install your sound card drivers. Go to the manufacturers website and get the latest WHQL drivers.
3rd-Go to Microsofts website and download and reinstall DirectX.
4th-Run system file checker. Check the link in the sources box for a nice, easy tutorial.

Good luck and Merry Christmas!!

Don´t download games, they are mostly infested with virus´s.

This sounds like one of these cases, does it attempt to go online as well:)
