the codec you need to play it

just download whatever you're downloading, if it won't play search for the appropriate codec for media player and it will play

Just different formats. MPG's are played on windows media player and MP4's are played through Quicktime or I-tunes. MP4's are compatible with things like I-pods and things. If you wanted to save them on there.
