Today I followed a school bus home (NOT my original plan), and the stupid thing stopped at every driveway in the subdivision where a kid was living.

Where cul-de-sacs branched off, mothers were waiting in their cars (!) to drive their kids exactly ONE block.

It was perfectly beautiful weather: sunny, and 70 degrees, so it's not like the kids had to walk in driving snow. And, it's a super safe neighborhood where nothing ever happens, and strangers don't hang out...ever. So, no child was in any danger.

What do you think? Could this expectation of being driven everywhere except inside the actual house be a reason why we have so many little porkers? Shouldn't kids be walking whenever possible, as much as possible?

Thanks for input, and thanks also for staying on topic and not dragging in OTHER causes of childhood fat.

Yes walking is good exercise for everyone not just children. But what you have to realize is that those "good" neighborhoods that you talk about are the ones that pedophiles like to hide out in. They know the parents think they are so safe, and before you know it little Johnny is gone. But safety is in numbers, if there is enough kids that could walk together they could get the exercise they need.

I think in good neighborhoods it's okay to let your child walk home, or ride a bike. I live in the city, and I will never do that. But, parents these days are also not minding what their kids snack on- giving them junk and letting them sit in front of the TV all day.
Video games are a big chunk of these. Kids don't go out and play anymore. And when you watch TV, play video games- you snack. It's not just not walking home from school, because that isn't actually enough exercise to keep most people healthy anyway. That's what, 15 minutes? It won't cut it.

That might be some of the reason why they are overweight. It certainly has changed since I was a kid. Everyone had to walk to the end of the street and the bus picked you up there.

It's not just the school bus its inactivity in all forms. When I was little we didn't have cable stations devoted kid shows, the intenet or video games worth playing for hours. So how did we entertain ourseleves? We went door to door asking that magic question, "can _____ come out and play?" Then we played catch, kickball and hide and go seek and ran around until it got dark or our parents forced us inside.

Now kids rarely play outside and usually not for long. My kids go outside for an hour max before they come in complaining that its too hot/cold or boring and when you see them outside in groups they aren't out to play a sport but on their way to someone elses house to sit around eating junk food, watching TV and get fat.

Thats why todays kids are so fat.

Yea, kids should even walk to schools that are close by; but thanks to our phsychotic social path molesters, they can't do that.
