Intel P3 and Intel Celeron has 3 type. There're :
Slot 1
Socet 370 Coopermine
Socet 370 Tualatin

Based on the type, you can change celeron into P3.

if your motherboard type's Slot 1, then the only way to upgrade's into P3 Slot A. no other else. Slot 1 chipset for intel's 440BX, 820.

if your motherboard type's Coopermine, then you can only upgrade into P3 Coopermine. PGA370 Chipset for intel's 810,815, for VIA 694 .

if your Motherboard type support Tualatine, then you can upgrade into P3 Tualatine or coopermine. Tualatin Chipset for intel only 815e, for VIA 694T. Tualatin's the best processor ever made by intel. AMD have a great loose. The heat's cool. the voltage's low.

But I sugget you to buy intel P4 Dual Core Duo. It's Tualatin evolution. So say Good Bye to AMD. hehehehe :)

in case you ought to purchase your self a working laptop or laptop first you apart from mght ought to evaluate what style of purposes do you opt to apply it for. on your question you haven't any longer reported something in regards to the specs of the two of the processors. frequently situations, there's no way a Celeron ought to overcome Pentium IV processors. the perfect distinction between a Celeron and a Pentium processor interior the FSB (front area bus), which acts as a provider of archives between the CPU and different gadgets at the same time with RAM, Video Card, HDD etc. even nonetheless the processing velocity must be the comparable, a Celeron might consistently be no longer tremendously much as good as a Pentium (IV) whilst it comprises the FSB. for this reason a decrease FSB can't enable the processor to accomplish at its optimal performance. to illustrate, there's a huge hall (different gadgets, RAM, HDD, etc) with a marginally small front (FSB) and there are ten people (archives) waiting outdoors interior the hall (CPU) to circulate into the hall, through fact the door is small, no better than one guy or woman can pass by way of it at a given time, in the event that they do attempt to pass thorough they might get caught between the door (the laptop freezes). yet as quickly as we replace the door with a huge gate, it potential that lots greater people might have the potential to pass by way of on the comparable time, subsequently saving fairly some time with none undertaking. i wish that this occasion clarifies the version between the two processors. yet remember those issues in basic terms depend once you're working heavier purposes (eg. gaming), or an working gadget, issues which demands greater memory or processing velocity. in case you opt to apply your laptop for the different wide-unfold applications (photos, video, song, word processing etc), then you relatively won't even choose a Pentium 4, a Celeron if so must be the the suitable option selection for you. i wish you come across my answer passable.

With over 20 years in PC business, I will say the gateways will take your P3 cpu. It's easy to find out, turn the gateway pC off, open the PC, find the place for cpu, take the fan out and switch the cpu, put the fan back..... and turn the computer on again. You will see if the PC take the P3 cpu or not.

depends on the motherboard NOT the manufacturer! The ziff socket may be a different pin out configuration. Contact Gateway with the system board # and they will tell you if it will accept the P3.
