Two main reasons: the hours fit in with their children's school hours, hence they can be home with their families "on time"; second, its the nature/nuture stuff. Females are in general more nurturing and often enjoy watching children learn and blossom. (Don't get all upset, guys, I know lots of great male teachers, too).

Even though people complain a lot about teacher pay, they're paid very well for the amount of time they spend working. Many teachers often have other jobs so they work more, and get as much money as other professonals. But if you're a woman and want to have a family, it's a great professon because you can get paid a fair amount with a lot of time off. They couldn't have life with such a nice structure if they were bankers or police (just kidding, girls can't be bankers or police)

I answer this as someone who trained to be an elementary school teacher but have gone on to 3 different careers in the 20 years since I made that decision. But, I can also tell you what I've heard other teachers say. This is my list of reasons:

Because my mother, aunt, grandmother was a teacher
Because "in those days" women could be nurses, teachers or secretaries. Teachers had the best hours and pay - not good pay but better than secretaries.
Because I like kids.
Because my parents wanted me to be a teacher.
Because it's a "nice job for girls".
Because you really have to give of yourself and not get a heck of a lot in return.
Because my teacher said that I would be good at it.
Because I thought that it was a good job for a woman - most of my teachers were women.
So that I could have the summers off to be with my kids.
Because it's respectable work for women.
Because I'm smart and it's a good job for smart women.
....... and many more.

Personally, what I think it comes down to is that the stereotypes of the 50s, 60s and 70s still persist today. Little girls are still raised to believe that teaching and nursing are women's professions. The gender stereotypes in jobs are still, sadly, quite strong in society today. Think about it, lot of people still make assumption about the sexual orientation of males in jobs like florist, hair stylist, librarian or secretary. I personally know men who hold all four of those types of positions and they are happily married men. My husband, for example, worked as a secretary for a while.
There is nothing wrong with a woman wanting to be a teacher. It is a very rewarding career and very challenging. The question in my mind is if many women are still seeing their career choices as being limited and/or wanting to fall into the tradition of their mothers and grandmothers.

In summary to my lengthy answer, I would say that women want to be teachers for many reasons. Most of those reasons do center around tradition and sexual stereotyping in career choices.

Women in our society are indoctrinated into believing that their lives should revolve around children.

Yes, some women DO love children and teach for the love of them, but more teach because they see it as an acceptable, safe occupation in our time. Growing up, they were told to play with dolls, or play house, and not given the opportunity to tinker with tools or science kits, like boys often are.

Thus, women today find a job as a teach to be rewarding for them and for our society! They thereby enhance the chances that the trend of female teachers will continue because FEMALES are the ones that children see most often in schools!

the reason why is because there is a part in our hearts that applies towards children as nature/nurture. I am a teacher as well and it is my passion to make a difference in child to see them grow with love and admiration from someone like me makes such an impact from someone like me as a woman instead of a man they just do not have that kind of a heart and passion to put into a child to make that difference into a child like a woman does. Men do not have the patience the way a woman does either especially with preschoolers.

I loved my career in marketing but now that I'm a mom I don't want to devote the time, energy or travel to be successful in that career. I need a career more suited to my current priorities, my children. What better way to be there for them than to be on their schedule. I went back to school to get my teaching degree and hope to have by the time my youngest enters school.

What better way to tell people what to do, and after all we know everything because we are so knowledgeable. It is a natural field to go into because we are nurturing..
