i would recommend a mexican stripe knee. they are wonderful pets. just make sure you get one that has been hand raised. just keep them in a safe terrarium, with a water dish that has a sponge in it (so they don't drown) and feed them crickets about once a week, depending on size. if they're not hungry, they won't eat, so take the crickets back out if hes not eating after a couple of hours. also, bear in mind, that if they're hungry they can be agressive. a tarantula's venom is equal to a bee sting. so, if youre allergic to bees, they may be a bad idea. one last thing.... tarantula's molt. the first time they do it, you'll probably think it's dead. he (most likely she) will be curled up in a ball upside down. just leave them be. in a couple days, they will be out of their skeleton, and you will have a nifty new spider. it's just something they do, so if you see that, don't throw em out!!! good luck, and have fun!!

They can be pretty cool pets. I hate spiders, but I worked at a pet store for several years and had to somewhat get over my fear so I could feed/water them, clean their cage, minor things. They are low maintenance, and I would start out with a Chilean Rose, Mexican red knee, or Mexican red leg. They need a shallow dish of water because they stand over their water to get a drink. They eat crickets, about 2-3 a week. I never got the nerves to hold one, but I had a few regular customers who would come in and they would get them out and handle them, if I wasn't so scared of them, I would have tried to hold one.

Your local bookstore likely has something, if not some pet stores sell pet related books.
