My best friend's little girl is one, and she has tons of stuffed animals and clothes already. I'd like to get her something relatively inexpensive (no more than $25) and useful.

For the holiday season i reckomend holiday books like one of my favorites the book that starts with "'Twas the night before Christmas and all trough the house..." also The Polar Express is also great. little toys are always great but make sure there wont be a chocking hazard. Stuffed animals are always great. or something from Fisher Price or someother baby toy thing. THE BEST PLACE TO GO WOULD BE TOYS-R US.

Last year (my nephews were 4 & 1), I had their pics taken at that place in the mall. That was expensive. However, maybe you could get a gift card to the Picture People or Sears Portrait Studio and her mom can have her pics taken when she wants.

However, not very exciting for a kid to open, but she's 1. She hasn't grasped "christmas" yet. You could also get a Toys R Us or Babies R Us gift card and mom can use it whenever. Kids that age are hard (I've had two nephews to deal with this for). They grow out of clothes and toys so quickly.

All my friend's children and nieces and nephews I bought the same gift for first Christmas: The children's book 'I'll Love You Forever' By Robert Munch.
Adored by parents and children this is a great gift. Last year my 18 year old daughter even asked for a new copy because hers was falling apart. Check it out, it will bring tears to your eyes.

Well the baby probably won't care so how about a stuffed animal or something like that.

A one year old would be happy with a cardboard box with a hole cut for a door... and a window... get a big box and fill it with styrofoam worms.... really get the parents mad...but the kid will love it....toss is a box or two of diapers the parents might apreciate that part...

You should get the baby a soft educational toy from Fisher Price.
