People just want a reason for their religion to get some publicity at this time of year, whether it's a store policy that "they must say Merry Christmas" or "they must not say Merry Christmas, only Happy Holidays." I think the number of people, whether they are Christian or not, who would be offended by someone telling them "Merry Christmas" is infinitely small. And Christians who would be offended that someone said "Happy Holidays" when there are many things happening at this time of year, from Hannukah to New Year's to Boxing Day to Kwanza, are also rather taking things to the extreme. Regardless of religious belief (I am non-religious, by the way), I think this should be a time of year for caring and sharing with one another, and we should all try a little harder to get along with one another, even if it's just for this one month out of the year.

The media does this so that people will make a big deal about it. I say Merry Christmas to everyone. If people are offended then so be it. I am offended when someone tries to tell me I have to say something to apeese them. I believe in GOD and I don't care who knows it. I will say Merry Christmas until the day I die. We celebrate Christmas due to the son of GOD, Jesus Christ. Therefore, Merry Christmas is appropriate. If you celebrate something else, that is your choice. However, this is Christmas and it will be celebrated as a Holy holiday. If no one likes it, they don't have to socialize out in public. Thank you and GOD bless.

While the United States of America is a pluralistic society representing a plethora of diverse religions, Christmas is, like it or not the predominant December holiday. Furthermore, the average Joe Blow or Jane Doe, even if they don't believe in God or aren't very religious, will not be offended by hearing 'Merry Christmas'. Only the uber-leftist, overtly anti-God Madelynn Murray O'Hares of our society will really make a big stink about it. But due to the effect such people have had on the higher-ups such store managers and other employers, they are paranoid that someone like that will come thru, hear the "M.C. word" and brand them as a religious fanatic and get them in legal trouble for "infringing on their freedom of religion".
And just as an aside, it reads "freedom of religion" not "freedom from having to hear, see, interact with or be affected in any conceivable form by religion".

Are you kidding me? This is the big concern of your life at this point? What if I told you to have a happy kwanzaa or a joyous boxing day? It may not offend you, but wouldn't it be easier for me to just say, "Happy Holidays!" and not worry about it?
You people are just trying to find something to complain about. If you want to say "Merry Christmas" then go open your own store and you can tell your employees to say anything you want. Until then... get back to work.

as a cashier, this bothers me, cause i believe in Christmas, but there is some that don't, so we are told to say happy holidays so that is not to offend some people. But i do have regular people that come in to my work that I know celebrate Christmas, and I do tell them MERRY CHRISTMAS.....rather not i get fired for it or not....its my belief and as I have always been taught, THE UNITED STATES ARE FREE AND I DO HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEACH AND RELIGION!

I live in an area of small communities... many stores today forbid their emplyees to say Merry Christmas... it is mostly happy holidays... I have asked at every store I go into and am told by employee after employee that this is the case...and many apologise to me for this... but under their breath as they fear getting fired.

Because on a slow news day, they still have to put together a newspaper and a news broadcast, not to mention the constant online news. So...they have to tell us that people are being forced to say "Merry Christmas" or they're being forbidden to. People will read it or watch it. What boring lives we lead...
