I would buy one that uses a flash drive but not a hard drive if it is refurbished. I work for Geek Squad and we have so many of those come back to be worked on.

Yes, my iPod mini is a refurbished iPod and it works great!!! I love it. They are totally safe.
IPods are classified by generation, yes. iPod shuffle, nano, and mini have 2 generations. of shuffle, the little white finger-like ones are first generation, the new silver ones are second.
Nano: the first generation nanos are only black and white. The second ones have an aluminum appearance, and they come in colors.
Mini: There are several ways to tell first and second generation minis appart. the color ones are easy, but the silver ones are difficult. One way to tell all appart is that the second generation ones have their hard drive size laser etched onto the back. also the colored ones, the ones that are second generation: the buttons on the click wheel match the color of the iPod.
iPod videos are considered fifth generation iPods.
iPod (dock connector) (the ones with the wheel and four buttons above it) are called third generation iPods
The iPods with click wheel (the ones with and without colored screens) are called fourth generation iPods.
Hope this helps!!!
