Like the ones you see in the movies. Is there really a place like that out there? If so, why is it still a small town?

I live in the most beautiful small town in America. Bakersville, North Carolina is a town with less than 400 people, nestled in the hills (Roan Mountain actually) that border the North Carolina / Tennessee line. The "pride" of the town are the Rhododendrons that bloom in May and they celebrate their beauty with a festival in June of each year. This town is the epitome of 'small town America' and the drawing factor for me (I moved from Austin, Texas 2 yrs ago) was the assurance that this small town cannot outgrow itself due to the surrounding mountains. The small town flavor will last forever on your tongue so stop in and visit Bakersville, North Carolina.

I wouldn't say it is the most bueatiful town as I haven't done that much traveling. However if you get the chance especially in the summer try Lakeport, California. There is boat launching and a Park right on the Lake. Then there is the down town area, all of the old two story buildings really unique.
The City of Lakeport wants to maintain there small town image and therefore try to limit new construction.

I love Gettysburg (PA). It's got a small town feel, but it gets millions of visitors a year so there's tons of stuff to do, especially if you like history. It's very walkable, which I think is a key to a small town. Cooperstown (NY) is a great town too. People in those two places make a concerted effort to maintain the small town character of the places even though there is so much development pressure.

My favorite small town is my hometown - Linesville, PA. It's probably not the "most beuatiful small town", but it's the one with the most meaning to me.

Crockett, California --- right on the Carquinez Strait. Looks like it's out of a Norman Rockwell.

everywhere on the western fringe of state (west of the cascade mountain variety) will be heavily forested and characteristic more beneficial rain than the eastern area of the state. My cousin teaches 0.33 grade contained in the Vancouver college district if that helps:)
