I don't think you have enough time. Some pills take only a week, but most require a month before they are fully effective. You also need to start them at a certain time in your cycle in order for them to work. I hate to suggest this, but if you are going to go ahead and not use a condom, despite the uncertainty of effectiviness on the Pill, check into Plan B and see if it is available in your area without a prescription.

When I first started taking the pill about 5 years ago, I was told that you have to wait a month before the pill reaches it's most effectiveness. But, then recently I read in a magazine that it may only take a week. The most important thing you can do to help insure you're getting everything you can from taking birth control, is to make sure you take it at the same time everyday and to not miss any pills. If you start taking the pill, but do not feel comfortable having unprotected sex yet, spermicides are always something to consider. They're pretty effective when used correctly and it's better than using a condom.

Unless the new pills are different, it takes a full pack before they are effective...the depo provera shot is effective immediately, and will last for 3 months so that is one option...condoms are another option for you...
You might check into the nuva ring (vaginal insert) as I'm not sure how long it takes to become effective.

If you start the pill on the Sunday after your period starts, then you will need to use a back up method of birth control for one week.

It takes one month for it to be an effective form of birth control. Until you have completed your first month you need to use back up protection.

If you start taking it during your period then you are generally protected after seven days of active pills, but if you are starting after your period, you may already have ovulated, so you have to wait until you have shed the egg in your next period to be protected.
