Also, does it matter what type of animal hair (goat, pony, sable, etc.) you use?

I know Bare Escentuals' original brushes are made from sable hairs (natural), but they tend to be rougher. Is there a reason they use that? Is firmer/rougher better for buffing?

Well, generally, it's best to go with natural brushes. They are better and generally softer for your skin. It just depends on the brand, but go with whatever is softer in that brand. The softer the better, 'cause your facial skin is very sensitive. I hope this helps!
