Like any city, there are parts where you will be OK and parts where you will not. It is a safe city though.
Do research on the neighborhoods - before you sign anything. You will likely be safe though. The areas around the Universities are pretty safe.

Number one, if you are going as a freshman in college, try to live in a dorm. You will meet more people and have less to deal with in terms of arranging phone service, electricity, finding an appartment. If you are an older student or graduate student (been there, done that living in a dorm), it all depends upon where you live. How close is the actual apartment to public transportation if you are counting on using that? Walking even a few blocks on a dark quiet street after leaving public transportation isn't wise if you are alone. Secondly, the security of the building itself will be an issue, in terms of building access. You have enough to worry about starting school, it would be nice if you didn't also have to worry about security. Ideally, if you lived in a building at least with many other students, you might be walking to/from the T with others, things like that. I lived alone in a nice area of Boston and late at night, walking from a bus or T stop....you are always a little fearful of possible trouble. And it's unlikely you will always be paying a taxi to bring you to your door.

It depends where exactly you will be living. Break-ins and occasional muggings in student areas do happen, but that shouldn't surprise anyone who is familiar with city life. I lived there for 4 years and never had any problems with crime. Are you totally set on a studio? You might consider going on craigslist (for example) and finding an apartment to share with others if you are worried about being by yourself.
I hope this doesn't put you off at all... Boston is a GREAT city!

It depends on where in Boston you're talking about. Overall, it's a safe city as long as you're smart (i.e.:lock your doors, don't walk alone late at night on deserted streets, etc.). The only neighborhood that I MIGHT be iffy about living alone in would be Mission Hill, but I lived there with 2 other girls for a couple years and we never had a problem.
A lot of my friends have had apartments broken into to, but none of them were home at the time, and the theives just took small things like laptops, dvds, cds, etc. So, yeah, it's pretty safe.

You'll probably be safe enough, just make sure you're in a section of town that has the college kids. Possibly try going to the Police Station and ask them where it's safe for kids. Also, try craigslist for an apartment, or an apartment to share. Why be alone? Have some fun!

Yes! Boston has good security because there are so many young college students all over the city. Just use some common sense, and avoid risky neighborhoods, etc. Its the same as any big city, and probably safer than a lot of them!!

Boston is very safe, depending on the neighborhood. If possible, live in the suburbs north of Boston (Medford, Somerville, Cambridge and etc.) The commuting options in the suburbs are excellent.

defintiely it's one of the most beautiful cities ever! I recommend staying around lights, people, etc. the normal things you are always supposed to do in every big city. Check out the South End or Back Bay, it's my favorite part of town and very safe!!!
