I live in CA.

Go to the DMV and apply for a M class license, it cost like 25 bucks, you will have to take 2 written tests, one for the CA driving law (this is half the test as the one for the C license) and the other for the Motorcycle license. Once you pass both test you will get a permit which is valid for a year, to get the full license you must either pass the DMV motorcycle skills test or take a MSF course.

The Skills test consist on driving your bike around the little circle on the side of the DMV parking lot, the MSF course is given by the CHP (MSF Motorcycle safety foundation), it costs $235 and you can get the information from the DMV or search online for Motorcycle safety foundation.

This is assuming you already have a C license.

It depends on your age. If you're over 21 and already have a driver's license, just go apply for your license. You either have to have completed a certified training course (you will have needed to have gotten a learner's permit for this) or you need to pass a skills test at the DMV (driving around at low speed on a course in the DMV lot). Assuming you're a new rider, you'll want to first get your motorcycle permit and practice some (you have to pass a written test). You can drive with this for 1 year with restrictions:. You may not:
* Drive your motorcycle at night
* Drive your motorcycle on the freeway
* Carry any passengers on your motorcycle
After that you must pass the driving skills test to get your license.

You need not wait long to take the skills test to get your full license- but it's a good idea to practice. It also requires a separate appointment.

Alternatively you can take, and pass, an approved training course and get your license without taking the skills test (you still need to get your permit first, though)

If you're under 21 your only option is to take the pass the approved skills course (which means you need to get your training permit first)

If your're under 16, you can get your permit when your 15 1/2, but you still can't get your license until you've had the permit six months minimum, and you're 16.

In all the above cases, you need to already have a class C drivers license, or to have taken and passed driver's ed and training or an approved driver training school.

It costs $26 to apply for a permit or license.

I don't know about CA. but in Virginia, I just got my motorcycle Learners permit. i had to take a test on the computer, then have the learners for at least 30 days, then i can take the driving test. In VA, you can take an approved safety and training moto course, and then you do not have to take the driving test at teh DMV. i would highly reccomment the safety course. i am going to take one in teh spring, just as soon as the weather permits. Good luck and have fun riding!!!!
i would check the DMV website for info...
