Yes you can dilate without contractions due to the stretching of the uterus with the fetus inside. You usually don't get past at least a 4 without contractions though. As far as how long will it be? That is a tough question...every pregnancy is different, and every person is different. If I had to guess for you I would say anywhere from 1-2 days to 1 week. If you are due on Sat is should not be to much longer for you. Remember walking can irritate the uterus and cause you to contract...BUT without the proper hormone as soon as you sit down the contractions will slow down and stop so don't stress yourself by walking unless your contractions started first...then walk only as a way to keep you busy. When you can't walk or talk through the contractions then go to the hospital. you don't want to show up to early or you will get hungry! Good luck with your pregnancy and labor! Enjoy the precious bundle!

Contractions before labor help the cervix thin and dilate. So you should feel some contractions before the labor begins. I am due a week after you and I"m only at 1 cm too. My Dr. said today that I should get more contractions as time goes on... I just want things to HURRY UP!! ; )

at 35 weeks I was 3 1/2 cm and having contractions that didnt lead anywhere. It was alwful. finally they induced me at 37 weeks and they had to break my water after 4 hours of nothing because the cervix was behind the babys head and couldnt get any farther. If it was below her head like a normal cervix, she would have been born at 34 weeks, so I guess that was its way of keeping her in there till she was term. I know that does answer your question, but I wanted to share my last child birth with you. You never get tired of telling the story of the day your baby was born. Best of luck to you and your baby. S/he will be here soon enough and you wont believe how fast time will fly by!!!!

1 cm is gret, but lots of women wal around dialated to 1 for weeks before delivery. The baby is likely low wnough that it is putting pressure on the cervix, causing it to dialate. The more contractions you have the more preassure is forced and the quicker you dialate. If you are due this weekend, then I'd say you are close, but your body needs to start the contractions before the baby will come.
Good luck and congratulations

Yes, contractions are what make you dialate. Not everyone feels their contractions. I was 3cm with my son and never felt one contraction...but when my doctor hooked me up to the monitors they were coming every 3 minutes, I just couldnt feel them.
If your a 1cm and your due date is around the corner it could go either way. You could go late and not dialate much more, or you could go into labor today...its just hard to tell!

Not everyone can feel their contractions but they are always there. Thats what pushes the baby down and out.

No, not necessarily. I didn't have contractions when I dialted. You could stay like that for at least two weeks.
