Early spring or late fall, dig your hole much deeper and wider than needed to remove all rocks and the possibility of clay. Plant with an amended soil, after watering deeply and then making a dome in the hole to set the root ball onto. Plant to where you just barely have a basin to catch water and water again. After which water with a root stimulator mix.

Either spring or fall is good. The earlier, the better - that's because it will need lots of water to get established.

Spring is a good time to plant it if you plant in the early part of the spring because of the coming rains.

If you plant it in September, you have all the rains that come in the fall and it will not dry out in the winter and it will have the spring rains to water it some more before the dry summer heat comes.

I like planting in the fall because mother nature does a lot of the watering for me. But do not depend on the rain. The tree will need a good soaking every day (with well drained soil) for at least a month, but I would not stop there. I like to make sure that my new trees/shrubs get watered frequently for at least 3 months. Maybe I baby them too much but I like to see them flourish.

Early fall or Early Spring. Your just in time for next year! Give it lots of water, and I recommend mixing in Bone meal into the soil before placing the plant down. Bone meal provides both Nitrogen and Phosphate which is needed for transplanting. Have fun, and good luck!

Early spring is good. If you are using it as an Xmas tree remember to let it go dormant shortly after xmas until the time you plant by puting it in a cool place otherwise it will be very stressed and probably croak
