It should be WORKfare. Work for your benefits, don't sit on your butt and pop out babies one after the other like some women do.

There is no debate against the fact that it is mis-handled and mis-used. Not only does it cost the tax payer unnecessarily but it destroys lives and families.
If anyone supports government programs, just look at those that are already in place. They are all failures and it is really hard to back out once the government takes control.
Welfare was originally intended to be a "helping hand". It is now a way of life that goes on in families for generations. Those who are using it as a profession has too much time on their hands and are often the law breakers or trouble makers, alcoholic or druger. Single parent households are encouraged because if both parents are in the home, it effects their government hand out. Thus, we have a whole segment of society that one would not want as neighbors.
Welfare, used as originally intended, is a responsible thing for our country. It is too loose and promotes abuse.
If we were to limit the time one could be on welfare, it would be less open to abuse. If we put restrictions, such as what one can own or purchase or require an account of every dollar spent....If this did not cut the roles, it would at least make persons use it for necessary purchases.

Welfare was started as a way to help the soldiers that came home after world war II. It was started just to assist people not be a hand out.
Don't get me wrong I am NOT TOTALLY against welfare, if someone needs help, I have needed it before, but i used it to make something better of myself not leach off of society, or felt that it was owed to me. I believe in the saying, "Give a man a fish feed him for a day, TEACH him to fish, feed him for life." I have heard to many times whenever they have tried to reform it or cut it, the ACLU has stepped in and says that they have a right to not work or can not be forced to work. I say fine if they can't be forced to work then why should the rest of society be FORCED to support them. I was brought up to have a work ethic, AN HONEST DAYS WORK FOR AN HONEST DAYS PAY.
I just think that it needs lots of reform. If people need it I can understand that but they should be made to work for the money they get, not be allowed to sit home and do nothing.
There are so many things that need to be done: Cleaning up the highways, neighborhoods to be cleaned up, rebuilding structures to help with housing, graffiti to be painted over, and many other things.
If they want to get involved with drugs or a crime of life cut them off welfare. Why should we have to support their kids while they are in prison. I also say if anybody on welfare has kids in school and the kids are ditching classes or not maintaining a certain grade level then deduct money from the welfare grant.
And, yes I know the bleeding hearts out there will say, "But what about the kids, they didn't ask to be brought into those circumstances" that is where their relatives can help support them. If they want to bring children into this world then step up and be responsible for their support.
Start holding the parents RESPONSIBLE for their actions and the behavior of their children.
Sorry this got this long but you asked about if we support it or how we would like it to be controlled and if people are taking advantage. Could not be answered in just a short paragragh.

I support the concept of welfare, that it should be a system to help those that need assistance getting on their feet financially. However, there are many that abuse it so I think the system needs to be controlled by how much you can receive each year you are on it, and also a maximum number of years established. It would also be positive if people were mandated to do some type of training or classes while they were on it to learn a trade that once they received a certificate/degree they would be eligible to apply for positions that would allow them to be self-sufficient. Under the current system some get paid more to be on it and not work rather than work and not be on it.

I support it but I think it should regulate better. Welfare was original set up to be a temporary situation not a permanent one like some people use it as. There are times when some people hit hard times and need a little help until they can get on their feet. But as always there are some people that use it as a reason not to get off their butts and work or do anything else. I support it with the understanding that it's temporary.

I feel it is good for people that desperately need it, but I also feel many people abuse it.
For instance, I have a friend thats husband was killed in Iraq, she has three children and worked part time as a medical assistant. In cases like this, It is okay. In some states, however there is no cap, so someone can collect their whole life. I feel it is okay to use it to get on your feet, but there are many people who want help that do not want to work, go to college, or even make any attempts to better their life. I think every state should have a 5 year cap, so less people will try to take advantage of it.

I know too many people abuse it!!!!! But, we have made society dependant on our handouts so the abusers are all in line. We enable otherwise lazy people to use us as crutches. I think if used correctly, this could be a source for a struggling person to receive help until they can manage on their own. I think there should be a stopfare program that gauges the progress and actual need of the recipient. There should be a strict guideline for acceptance and investigation before any aide is granted. There should be a max level where a person is cut off but someone following them through the program coaching them to success. It is sad though that those who really need the help can't get it as readily: ie: mentally ill, handicapped, widowed, injured, seniors.

Defiantly there needs to be a better system. there are too many people taking advantage. They get welfare because they are to lazy to work and it teaches their kids the same thing. Illegals need to get out and off our system as well

The system don't work that way anymore. You can't stay on it long.
My ex-wife got two years help then had to fend for her lazy fat azzed self. It was beautiful. Good thing she married that idiot. saves me paying spousal support. I like the way it works now. I would like to see it help kids more. But it cant be a permanent fix. Unless some chick wants to grow old having babies, that is.

Welfare is necessary for the people to show benevolence. To be forced to provide it to those ungratefuls via cooercion of my tax dollars is unconcienable..
It should be provided via private donations.
