i think the real question is "Is blu-ray worth it?" It only looks slightly better on thats only IF you have a really nice tv. HD-DVD is also on the prowl to be the next format for movies as well. If you WANT to go the blu-ray route, and have the tv and think the picture is THAT much better, then yes a ps3 is a good option for a blu-ray player. Look at it this way, a regular old blu-ray player is 999.99 (at least at bestbuy). The ps3 is 599.99. So for 400 dollar less, the ps3 is like a bluray player with top notch gaming, a 60gb harddrive (Which is easily homebrewable), a internet browser, dvd player, music player, picture viewer, ps2, ps1..ect. So your PAYING almost half the price for something with MUCH more.
though...
thats only if you think blu-ray is worth it.
Do some research on blu-ray vs HD-DVD. They would both cost the same. 600$. (Xbox 360 + HD-DVD add-on would together cost 600).
goodluck and hope your happy with your choice.

The psthree is an exceedingly sturdy Blu-Ray DVD participant and is not any longer a "low end" type in any way. Sony is customary for hardly in no way making get admission to point products, they only make the right tier products. additionally, the PS3's Blu-Ray purposes could be upgraded by ability of application updates and upload's new valuable properties to the PS3's Blu-Ray valuable properties. as a be counted of fact, the final replace in December 2007 secure a Blu-Ray replace for the psthree. although, stand on my own Blu-Ray DVD gamers can't be upgraded by ability of application updates.

the ps3 blue ray rom is actually very unreliable as of now, sony hinted it themselves. they are suppose to come out with 4 million ps3 before christmas, but only 2 millions were cranked out for japan and north america, and the reason is the blue ray dvd player's short comings. check on ebay to see how much you sell it for, sonny is making more right now and i'm sure will fix any problems with the previous batch of ps3's.

i heard a lot of negative things about the ps3 freezing up/ not reading discs properly, so you might want to wait and see when come out with a second gen version of ps3 before buying it for the absurd amount they are asking for.

If the Blue Ray format takes off, then yes. If not, it will still be great for the purpose it was intended for...... playing video games.
Keep it.

For Blue ray alone....NO!!!
The debate of VHS vs Beta was settled..what will win this time..
Sony always has to be different.
IE:Memory card ,tapes,min disks..yah Mini Disk..were are they now?
so no!! HdDvD may win out.
