Playing an instrument is like playing the melody of your life. When you pick an instrument make it as close sounding to your character as possible. If you are a laid back quiet person I suggest something soft like a violin or a flute but if you are talkative and loud I suggest a brass instrument, and if you're stuck in the middle you should try a wood wind.

I would recommend a harmonica.
There inexpensive, ($20.00 to $30.00) easy to carry and they will help you to learn your scales and give you an ear for music.
Throw out the papers that come with the harp that show you how to play using "tongue blocking". That is something you will use when you become much more adept at playing.
You will need to practise in order to form an 'ombrochure' that is to strengthen the muscles of the mouth to be able to form single notes.
You can tape over (scotch tape) all but one hole or two so you can learn the sounds of the notes. As your lip muscles get stronger you can open up more holes or tape them back up again. I would recommend a Hohner Golden Melody in the key of 'C'. Then get a 'D', 'A', 'G'.
There are a lot of sites on the web that are free that will help you learn to play. Then you can pick up a guitar or small keyboard (again something that is easy to carry and is self-contained) and away you go.
REMEMBER:
If your getting frustrated, put down the harp until later. If it's not fun, take a break. It will be a pleasant surprise when you start to play songs you know an play along with the ones on the Internet and the the radio.
Good luck!
PS-the more you practise the luckier you'll get!

It's never too late! Saxophone is fairly simple, you could probably learn the basics and play some little tunes within a month max, to sound decent probably take about 6 months to a year. This is with every day practice of course. Violin you could probably play very simple tunes within a month minimum, to sound decent would take a year with no musical background and every day practice. By everyday that's a half an hour to an hour regularly. I play both instruments, incase you needed some kind of credibility.

I'd recommend learning the guitar or the piano. You can find lessons for either fairly easily and both are 'adult' type instruments that you can proudly play for others. The guitar has the benefit of being MUCH more portable and inexpensive if you don't already have an instrument.

I think what you should do is that if you know somebody in band or whatever, then ask them if you can try out their instrument. try out a bunch of them, not just a few. in my experience, if you're going to hate the instrument, you might know the first time you try it. I play a lot of instruments, and there's a few that I really don't like, just because they're awkward to me. but everyone is different, so I would definitely say try as many as you can. whatever you like the best you should learn. good luck with that!

i play the flute and i have played for 6.5ish years. It was easy to learn, but it takes a couple weeks to actually make a sound. You can buy student books online and teach yourself. You can email me questions if you want.

I think the piano is the easiest. You'll get bored of it after a while. Then you can try guitar. You'll get bored of the acoustic one so get an electric one. Guitar is fun when you make your own stuff up.
