When can you use a SCSI RAID Controller with a SATA Motherboard?

I know that you can do this, but I am a bit confused as to when and how. The SCSI card is a single channel, and the mobo is the Supermicro PDSMi+

The controller plugs into a PCI slot and that's it.... You don't use the motherboard interfaces for your SCSI devices, connect them to the controller card.
