You can not force anyone into the Christmas spirit.
But, if you want him to have fun - let him help as much as he wants to help. Do not force him to do things he hates or that he can not do. Maybe he would like to help pick out the foods or maybe pick out the music or set up the stereo system or maybe he can do decorations. Push him too hard and you become his Mother and not even his loved Mother.

There is really no way to "make" someone have a festive spirit. If he's stressed out about something, or just isn't happy, maybe you can get him to talk about it.
But unless he wants to cheer up and have a good time, you might have to make the best of it.

Stop telling him to 'get in to the spirit of things' - theres nothing more annoying and irritating than having someone tell you to be happy.
If you want him to have fun, just let him, or let him not have fun. Its not the season of oppression.

I am not trying to be flippant, but...ALCOHOL!
My husband is a wonderful person, but pretty uptight. He needs to relax and loosen up. Alcohol (in moderation of course) works wonders!
If you don't like that answer, maybe you know another way for him to loosen up?
