How long will the string last ?

You have 2 fire strings which burn up for exactly 1 hour each but they burn with a different speed.
How can you measure 45 min using the 2 strings?

Fold either or both strings in half, then half again. Cut off 1/4 length from either or both strings. Now they will burn for 45 minutes.
