My wife's a teacher. First, you need a 4 year college degree, usually in education or early childhood development. Then you have to get certified by the state that you will be teaching in, which involves taking and passing written test Then, if you ever want to make any money teaching, you have to get a Master's Degree.

There are various types of teacher preparation programs, including some aimed at mid-career professionals from other fields. Each state has its own teacher licensing and certification program. Most of these programs fit into the following categories:

Four- or five-year college degree programs in elementary education or secondary education, to certification upon graduation. These programs can vary greatly depending on individual university requirements.
Post-collegiate programs for people who hold a bachelor's degree and wish to enter the teaching field.
Alternative licensing and certification programs in states where there is a shortage of teachers in a particular field. These programs tend to be short-term and intensive in order to get professionals into the classroom quickly
