Yes...it's very worth it. We use only laptops in our family, one for each family member. After trying several different brands we have decided that Dell is our favorite.

Like the first answerer said, Dell came to our house and fixed the problem. We have had to have them come out a couple times. The tech recommended either Dell or Toshiba laptops. He said that they do fewer service calls on these brands.

I was afraid that after leaving a major metropolitan area that we would have trouble getting our laptops serviced, but with Dell we have not had any problems getting problems taken care of.

Good luck with your future purchase!

Yes, get one. You will never know when you need it. Dell usually includes a one year service plan on all their models. We bought an extra year. Our power source died two months before the end of the second year. A Dell technician came to the house and replaced it. No Charge. It most likely would have cost us $100 if we didn't have the plan so yes the extra $40 that we paid was worth it. But hey, if you are one of those computer geeks that can take care of all problems by yourself, then go ahead and take your chances.

It depends on who the service contract is coming from.

Dell -- HP
Both offer free service for the first year & offer service plans for years 2,3 & 4. I'd recommend the purchase of a service plan from a fortune 500 company like this.

In most cases, the cost is very much higher than the level of risk warrants. In most cases, it's a big ripoff. If it's two or three percent of the cost, maybe it's worth it, but it seems pretty silly to me to spend $1,000 on something and then pay $100 for a maintenance plan. Save your money from all the extended warranties you don't buy, and then if something breaks, you're probably ahead of the game.
