Make sure it's completely switched off. (Take the fuse out!). Now take off the cover on the end of the immersion heater. You'll see a thermostat with the live cable connected to it. There's a screw in the end for turning it up and down.

To reduce the temp. of immersion heater, switch off the supply at the cosumers unit, then on your hot water cylinder you will see your immersion heater mounted on the side / front of the tank coloured red with a nut in the middle or a screw, remove the red cover and under neath you will see your white butyl flex with the red / brown wire connected to a small square/ish dark red unit, this is the thermostat, on the centre of this you will find a round black button with a slot for a small screwdriver, with a tempreture scale above, insert screwdriver into the slot and turn anticlock-wise to a lower number, refit the cover and re-instate the power and allow to rise to temp. then check the water temp. after 45mins. or so. hope this helps.

Please be careful.
I get really twitchy when I read in Answers about unqualified people messing around with electricity.
If in doubt, get a professional in.
Electricity can kill.
