If you wanted, you could make the argument that the first one actually took place in 1884 between the NL's Providence Grays and the team they defeated 3-0, the American Association's New York Metropolitans. It was called the World Series, but isn't officially recognized as such by MLB.

The first modern World Series was in !903 between the Boston Red Sox of the upstart American League and the Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League. Back then, the series was a best of nine games and the Boston Red Sox were triumphant 5 games to 3, coming back to win the inaugural World Series after being down 3 games to 1!
