suppose the capacity of the smaller van is x
capacity of the larger van=x+14
the equation is
2x+x+14=65
3x+14=65
3x=51
x=17
capacity of the smaller van is 17 and that of the larger van is 31

It is not completely clear what the question is.

Do you mean you need either the large van (once) or the smaller one (twice)?
Or do you mean they are both used, and together they can transport 65 people?

Is 65 including or excluding the drivers?

Assuming a maximum of 65 passengers:

seats in small van = a
seats large van = b

Maximum transport capacity, when the small van makes two trips and the large van only one: 2 * a + b = 65

Seats in the large van are more than in the small van: b = a+14

Solve:

2 * a + a + 14 = 65
Move 14 to the right
2 * a + a = 51
combine 2*a and a
3 * a = 51
divide both sides by 3:
a = 17

small van has 17 seats (and one for the driver)
large van has 31 seats (and one for the driver)

x = the smaller van
if van x makes the trip twice then let 2x = van x = then number of people transported

let x + 14 equal the larger van therefor

2x + x + 14 = 65

combine like terms

3x + 14 = 65
- 14 = -14
-----------------
3x = 51
/3 = /3
-----------
x = 17 + 14 = 31

31 + 17 = 65

let the smaller has x seats ,then the larger has (x+14)seats
then(x+14)+2x< or=65
3x+14 3x< or =51 divide both sids by 3
then x< or =17
the larger has 17+14=31

I believe the anser is 31. If the smaller one has 17, add 14 = 31.

2s+l=65
l=s+14
substitute

2s+s+14=65
3s=51
s=17
l=31
