It depends. Santa fills the stockings of course. But he can give a few big presents or many little ones. And he can always give your family a gift-like a game or family DVDs. I think it is personal to the family.

If the issue is what they hear freinds saying Santa gave..., then you can tell them that Santa brings that special something that you really wanted and because of the time it took to find that special thing, Santa had to let mom and dad do the other things so he could help other children. If money is an issue (and who is it not an issue for) then say that if we just buy gifts for one person in the family, how would your cousin's, grandparent's, aunts and uncle's feel if we didn't remember them too.

But if you just want to go by a number you set your self up for trouble-this year it is 10, next year Christmas is terrible if you only get 10 so you need 15, and so on. Think of Harry Potter's cousin and his birthday temper tantrum. Don't focus on how many or how much-focus on how well it will be liked and how special. I doubt many folks can resite every toy Santa ever gave, but we all have a special Christams where Santa gave us just the right thing!
