My neighbor told me that when she was pregnant and took prenatal vitamins her hair and skin grew like crazy. She says she still takes them now but I'm still a little skeptical. Will taking prenatal vitamins when you're not pregnant hurt you?

I am no doctor, but I know that my sister asked the doctor this question when she was trying to get pregnant. She had problems getting pregnant, but her doctor had her on prenatals the entire time. She took them for at least a year before she ever got pregnant. The doctor told her it would start building the necessary vitamins for when she did get pregnant.
She never experienced any problems from taking them. She had very thick hair to begin with, so there was really no way to know if it was worse with the vitamins.
I have another friend in a similar situation and her OBGYN also has her on prenatals and they are only trying to get pregnant now! So good luck! Hope this helps!

No, in fact it's good for women who are of childbearing age and planning on becoming pregnant to take prenatal vitamins. The major difference between regular daily & prenatal vitamins is an increased dose of Folic Acid, which has been shown to prevent birth defects in babies such as spina bifida. Your body stores Folic Acid over time, so it's actually smart to make sure you're taking it before you get pregnant!

When I first mentioned getting pregnant to my doctor, she wanted me to immediately start taking prenatals, and I'm sure other OB's will tell you the same thing.

As far as taking them to make your hair and nails grow faster, it's not just the prenatal vitamins that do that, but also the pregnancy hormones.

No, they are just vitamins. They will not hurt you, and if your thinking of becoming pregnant some time in the near future, it will help your body prepare for the pregnancy.

No they will not harm you. Your body disposes of any excess vitamins your body doesn't need.

Prenatal vitamins are prescribed for woman who aren't pregnant frequently as a way to get their iron level up if it's abnormal.

How could they, and who told you they would? It's a multi-vitamin with many supplements needed by the body. No, they won't hurt you.

The only problem might be too much Iron. Iron sometimes causes constipation so that is a sign you might be getting too much.
