How do you get to the sunken ship in Atlantica, I try riding the dolpin but have no idea when to let go

I think you are riding the wrong dolphin. Follow these directions - this dolphin takes you directly to the area you need to be in:
Inside of Ariel's Grotto, sink to the bottom level to find a chest with a MEGA-POTION. Hitting the barrel on the other side of the room gives you some MP Balls and sometimes ETHER. Head upward, looking for chests you can open. One contains a COTTAGE and the one near the top has a TORN PAGE. Leave Ariel's Grotto back to the Undersea Gorge. Follow the Trident’s BACKWARDS until you find a hole in the wall leading to the Undersea Cave. The hole at the bottom of this area leads to the Calm Depths. Use the geyser in the middle of the room to head upward into the Undersea Valley. Alternately, you could just hit the urchin on the wall with a Fira spell to create a shortcut. Locate the dolphin here, and ride him to a new area. Let go once you get "upstream" and into the new area. Enter the door here to the Sunken Ship.
