I agree with you, that I don't understand what the big deal is. I am a Catholic but was NEVER offended that someone in a store wished me Happy Holidays instead of saying Merry Christmas.

People need to frickin' lighten up already.

Not only a religious view, but it is a moral(freedom of speech) that is trying to be taken away. Some stores are not allowing their employees to say Merry Christmas in fear that it will offend someone. If we really don't care then why can't anyone say Merry Christmas, or bite my Christmas toes if they want. That's the main point, a certain group of people are trying to have the word banned, just cause they don't like it.. Doesn't matter if we as a society don't like their views, no reports of us banning their ideas... Equality?...

No problem and no news story, but it employs people and marketing surveys indicate that most people are not offended by greeters but appreciate the attention they receive when first entering a store. Like you, I would question their effectiveness since I am semi-irritated at the feebleness of it all, especially at Christmas when I take on the characteristics of Screwdge. I mostly hate the insincere “Welcome to PayMart” expressions and long to slug them in the mouth. When they did the surveys about greeters they did not interview me (an obviously you). Perhaps it was because of my normally down-curved lips which reflect my general disposition which clearly states that I would indeed slug a survey taker IF they were to try talking to me. In fact, I've found it is only the bravest of greeters that I can even get to take a second look in my direction. However, this fact is handy and something I am sharing with you so that you to can successfully deal with these low paid idiots who have nothing better to do than greet me.

Based on my experience I would recommend that you continue to acquire a mean, nasty disposition toward greeters and especially at the holiday season when more of them are out. I know that in some devious way, greeters make my day simply because I know I have been rude to them by not acknowledging their presents. One of my favorite techniques is to mimic them. For example when they say “Welcome to PayMart”, I turn my lips and shake my head as I say “Welcome to PayMart yourself” without even a smile. The reaction I get from most greeters is worth every effort to say it to them. Remember, if they are rude back to you then they are not doing their jobs. Have fun with this one and “Happy Holidays” !

Speaking as a Christian (someone who has professed their faith in Christ and believes that Jesus was born, died on the cross so that our eternal souls would be saved and 3 days later he rose to sit at the right hand of our Father), I am not so much offended when someone says Happy Holiday BUT what I am offended at is those stores..Best Buy, Target.. that will not allow their employees to say Merry Christmas. If the clerk can say Merry Christmas and chooses to say Happy Holidays, thats their choice. However being told that they can not tell us Merry Christmas is wrong. They are worried about offending the pagans of the world, but not the Christians?? Christmas was origianlly Christ Mass...meaning the birth of Christ. Was he born for sure on Dec. 24th? Scholars don't thinks so, but that is getting completely legalistic. The original reason for the celebtration of Christ Mass WAS Christ's birth. And because of His holiday, people go INSANE shopping (whether they realize the true meaning of Christmas or not) and spending billions of dollars, so for that reason alone, ALL store owners shoud be on their knees confessing their faith and giving all praise and honor and glory to the Magestic Father above, because only by His power are they truly blessed to have these stores to run.

well just like last year at ***mart, when they said happy holidays the catholic league told all there parishioners not to shop. after all you also are wishing the Jews Happy Hanukkah along with merry Christmas and some times even happy Ramadan. cant have that but aren't we being kind of nasty to say merry Christmas to the Jews that come into the store.

you just can't please people but the stores sure are trying

What's more, why do stores have greeters? I understand having someone stand at the exit in case the alarm goes off, but what's the point of having someone whose only job is to say hi to you?

I think it is a matter of choice. Theologians agree that Jesus was not born in the cold season but if that is when the mass agrees to celebrate it, that is the chosen choice for generations. I celebrate my birthday so I see nothing wrong in celebrating Jesus's birthday. I am just glad HE was born. Unfortunately, to the person who has chosen this particular event as their pet peeve to pursue, they are bothered by the greeting they receive. The news media looks for every reason to voice/air controversy because we make them think that is what we want as news. Where is the good news!!!!!!!!!!????????

It is not a problem. It's people getting their knickers in a twist and complaining just to hear themselves. If your entire world comes screeching to a halt based on what a courteous store employee says who has absolutely no significance in your life, then you have much bigger issues to deal with.

It's business, it's all about the money. Being nice brings the customer back into the store again.
