Nice and steady starts it; but hard and fast wins it at the end.

Nice and steady, but sometimes you have to kick it in to fast and hard to come in first.

there's definitely not one answer. for long distance, generally those who start out fast and hard end up way behind those who start out slower but keep a steady pace throughout. for 100 or 50 yard dashes it's always best to go fast and hard all the way though.
