A literary agent does the same thing that an agent in any other field might do (sports or acting, for example). They market their clients and help place them. An agent will talk to publishers on your behalf, and help to get your book read. They will also negotiate a contract for you.

I would suggest the "Guide to Literary Agents" by the folks at Writer's Market for more information and listings of places that you can start submitting to.

Keep in mind one thing-- you should NOT have to pay for these services. Agents get paid when they sell your book!

A literary agency will read and assess your book. They may help if it needs a bit of work, but for that you really need a copy-editor. A literary agent's job is to sell your book to the publisher. Books submitted via an agent are more likely to be looked at seriously by publishers since someone in the business has already approved of them.

Good luck!

a literary agent helps you refining your book and finding a publisher. you can check the novel and short writer's market for a list of literary agents, but you can also try and send your manuscript to publishers directly without agents. in the end it all depends on the quality of your work and your cv as a writer (whether you have an mfa or previously published work etc..)
