mention a great deed performed by Reagan, and attribute it to being something great that bush has accomplished (*cough *cough Yeah right). If the person, you are speaking to, goes on a spew about other things bush has done right, he is a neocon. If he corrects you, and tells you not to insult Reagan like that, he/she is probably a true conservative.

neocons will also be the people that tell you we have too many rights, and should give some up for security!

what the heck is too many rights, when you are at war with someone who supposedly hates you for your freedom? isn't that like appeasment? giving terrorists a victory??

Ask them if the believe in freedom. Freedom is the defining characteristic of modern conservative thought. Freedom FROM government. Freedom from political correctness. Freedom to keep and use our hard earned money how we see fit.

Neither major political party embraces true conservatism anymore.

Yes, true conservatives realize that a lot of what Bush is doing has nothing to do with conservative principles. Those who have no idea support Bush unconditionally.

Most true conservatives do not support Bush. Neo-cons, those who have no idea what conservatism is, do support Bush. That's an easy start.

-Conservatives support small government; neo-cons do not
-Conservatives believe in non-interventionist foreign policy; neo-cons do not
-Conservatives believe in minimal government interference in private lives (ie: gay marriage, abortion); neo-cons do not
-Conservatives believe in balanced or close-to-balanced budgets; neo-cons do not
-Conservatives do not believe God should influence policy; neo-cons do

That's just a few points.

It's in the U.S. Constitution and Bill Of Rights, read them, and see whether or not the people you question support what is in those documents, and why. Simply put, less government is better.
