motivating factors (no particular order).
1. Regret: if you have come this far... and 'what if I'd...'
2. Actual Curiosity.
3. The benefit of humankind
4. Social kudos and sometimes can call yourself doctor.
5. Inertia: if you are contemplating a PhD then you've probably already gotten used to an academic lifestyle.
6. Security: A PhD can increase your employ-ability in the market place, even if that turns out to be staying on as an academic.

people do phds because they are interested in a certain field and would like to further their knowledge and knowledge in general about that particular topic. phds are not typically motivated to get that degree for the title or for the money. in the end, it leads to more money but there are many years of hardship financially during the time they are getting their doctorate and during post-doc work. phds are academics motivated by their desire to learn.
phds are typically paid to go to school, although they make very little money. their payment is called a stipend and covers the cost of tuition and other living expenses.

In my opinion, education often accompanies competition, the more education you obtain the more like you are to land a great career. Obtaining a Ph.D. after receiving your masters would give you an edge over others in your field. Just like in a regular job if you have more experience you get more pay, if you have more education you are likely to earn more than the people in your field that do not have a Ph.D.

If you really enjoy learning you should definitely seek higher education because in most cases financial costs for this degree is covered by grants and or scholarships.

Because it means more acquisition of knowledge (the more one becomes learned, the more one comes to realize that he knows so little), because it is the next logical step when you have graduated from your Masters, because it means increase in ranking and subsequently the salary scale, because one would like to be addressed doctor, because learning stimulates the mind and enhances the character as well. There are still multifarious reasons based on each individual's preferences, these are only a few of them.
