i can tell you the advantages from personal experience...it's a lot less expensive than driving yourself around because you don't have to pay for gas-just a fare. you can sleep (if you dare) while you travel.

disadvantages (also from experience): the conditions of public transportations aren't always, let's say healthy. you meet a lot of unstable people. and you don't always get dropped off in the exact spot where you plan on going.

Public transportation is healthier for the environment, you don't have to worry about parking, auto registration, auto maintenance fees or anything like that. But if you only ever take public transportation, you'll always have to be on someone else' schedule & wait for a bus/train, you may have to walk to your final destination if the bus stop or train station isn't right by it. I guess it depends on your individual needs. You could always get a used car & use it on occasion, unless you would rather just rely on public transportation.

Pros: It's convenient, no parking hassles, saves fuel, better for the environment etc.
Cons: You are at the whim of their schedule, may run into religious zealots or rabid democrats who wish to convert you.
My advice:
1.Never make eye contact. If you do, your doomed.
2.Wear dark glasses. This goes with the eye contact bit.
3.Clutch a Bible (or other religious document, such as a stack of "The Watchtower") tightly to your chest, and look around anxiously as if you are eager to talk to anybody.
If you follow these steps, your next voyage on public transit will be an enjoyable one.
