If enough people refuse -- it will stop. Right now, too many people buy into the idea that if I work hard, I will get further. I suspect a couple of things:

1. People have to find out that "further" in terms of money, is not necessarily the right "further".
2. That working hard doesn't even pay off in terms of money! In fact, most of the "workaholics" that I know make about the same money as my husband and I. I work from home as a writer and my husband has a 4 day work week, which has really added to our quality of life -- and we hardly notice the reduction in pay to us.

If enough people become aware of the paradox -- that money isn't making them happier and what they want is to be happier -- then there could be a large social shift. Big companies can only get us to work longer and harder if we agree to do it. With enough people refusing, it couldn't continue.

That's true of all social change: as soon as there is a 'critical mass' of people who want things to be different, the whole society shifts that way.

If your talking about working just to survive about 80-90% of those in the workforce do that. Fortunate indeed is the individual who finds work he/she enjoys....its worth the effort.
