In my planned trip to Europe, due to a shortage of time, I am now indecisive about wether to spend 3 days 3 nights in Rome with 1 day 1 night in Austria, or 2 days 2 nights in Rome and 2 days 2 nights in Austria. Could anybody give a recommendation based on personal experience, how should i divide my time?

Rome has so many beautiful places to visit and is great at this time of year. I would personally recommend 3 nights in Rome and 1 in Austria, because I feel like you could see a decent amount of Austria in a day but that Rome has more to offer a casual tourist.

If you are set on visiting both, spend equal time there and decide where you will return on your next visit to Europe. I agree with other posters that you can spend a lot of time seeing the sights in Rome, however Austria has a lot to offer as well. I have spent a lot more time in Vienna because of work and there a many places I haven't yet explored, but Rome takes my breath away - I don't think I could exhaust siteseeing activities in Rome. No matter what you decide, you will have a wonderful trip - so don't stress and have fun!

Both combinations are restrictive! Rome is a big city with so much to see,I don't think that you can see the whole city in 2 days..!On the other hand to see Austria you need 5 days and more!Great country! I've been in both places so I can tell,Why don't you go 4 days in Rome or 4 days in Austria? But better 4 days in Rome!
Have fun with whatever you do....

Personally, I would go for 3 days in Austria and 1 day in Rome. I love Austria, so maybe I am a little bit subjective.
whatever u choose in the end, I believe that what it really matters is to have a great time. so, enjoy ur trip!

If you have only 4 days and nights, I'll suggest to stay in Rome. And it will be not enough to see all the beauties of the city. But to go in Rome and Austria (a country, don't forget) in 4 days, it means to do......nothing.

I think you should spend 4 days in Rome and skip Austria or vice versa. You will certainly be able to occupy yourself in Rome for 4 days. 2 days is not enough for Rome and certainly not enough for Austria. You need at least 2-3 days for Vienna, Innsbruck and Salzburg each....plus consider the time you spend traveling from one place to the other. You should just skip Austria or Rome this time and make sure to see it next time you are over there.

It sounds like a lot to cram in in a short time.

I think Rome is better if you have more time to spend there. You can certainly cram in the major sites in a short amount of time. I would personally skip Austria altogether for extra time in Rome, but it depends on what your tastes are. If that sounds like too long in Rome, you could always take a day trip out of Rome to Pompeii or Florence. 2 days in each sounds like trying to fit too much to see plus travel time in, and is one day in Austria really worth it (unless you're in transit to somewhere else)?

You'll need at least half a day to see the Vatican, St. Peter's Basillica, and the Sistine chapel, as there are always lines.
The Coliseum and Roman forum will take another half day, plus you'll want time to shop and eat. Spanish Steps and Trevi fountain are also musts. I've been to Rome twice because I couldn't fit in everything in 4 days the first time I went, and I'm the type of personal who moves through things (museums, shops, etc.) relatively quickly.

Whatever you decide it sounds like a fun trip.
