I seriously cannot strum. I try to play along with the song and everything and all of a sudden, I'm off in some random strum that doesn't have any pattern or rhythm and sounds nothing like the song. Is there hope? Or am I doomed to suck forever?

No, your not doomed forever. I was in the same boat a few years back. It really helps if you can find somebody else to play guitar with. Keep practicing and you'll get the hang of it eventually.

well, strumming the guitar has nothing to do with the rhythm. listen to the song without playing, catch the timing. count and tap your foot (1&2&3&4&, 1&2&3&4& tap your toe on the numbers count the & beats) learn the timing feel it through your leg then try and play. If you have a desire to play don't let that stop you. have fun.

Strumming is a whole different animal than playing lead licks. It's mostly done with a loose wrist. Listen to Steve Miller Band's Serenade. The trick is to get the up and down motion going, but only hitting the strings when you need to.

I started playing when I was 10 years old, and I really sucked, everybody does when they first start. But I wanted to play guitar more than anything so I stuck with it and now I have no problem playing. Just keep trying and trust me, you will be able to play anything you want. Another person suggested that you should try playing with someone else, he's right.

First, go to the guitar store and buy a cheap metronome. Second, use it when you practice. Start it out a little slower, and speed it up as you get better. Do this same thing when you learn scales.

No one uses metronomes anymore, and I find it helps everyone who seriously uses it. Eventually you'll get to a point where you won't need it anymore. I know it sounds boring or uncool to use one...but it really does work.

I don't know. Anyone who can 'suck' AND 'strum' at the same time HAS to have good rhythm man! ;-)

You need music discipline. Just practice riffs that you particularly like, then some simple songs.
