A flag is not just a symbol, it represents the soul of a nation and is a sort of ambassador,if you like, for a nation. It says a lot about the nation and what its people stand for.
I guess thats why it is so important...

It is a symbol of the country, which *IS* it's significance. It is not necessary for a counrty to have one, i.e. there is no international comittee that says "No flag, then you're not a country", but flags are used to symbolize the presence of a country at an event/summit/meeting etc.
Through out the history of war, armys have carried standards, flags, banners or some sort of indentification which is propably the reason that we have them.

The origins of flags lies in ancient history. Originally they may have been simply decorative streamers, or perhaps ceremonial images. They were superior to many other emblems: cheap and simple to make; easy to carry and display; and attracting attention with their lifelike movement in the wind.
The modern national flag arose in the seventeenth century, with the creation of the first modern states.
A flag represents an idea, or an ideal. It is neither a mere piece of decoration, nor an object to be honoured for itself. It is honoured for what it represents. Many flags are held in high esteem for their history; for the sacrifices made by the people; for the qualities for which the country and people stand.

The origin of flags....the knights and warriors of different nations used to carry along with them their nation's gods, in order to have favor with said gods during their sojourns into battle. Well, the idols got deucedly heavy and cumbersome to carry around, so they decided to put an image of that god onto a piece of fabric, and carry it along that way. They would tie it to a pole in order to have their god "riding before them" as it were. The national flag has come to mean a symbol to identify that nation, but this was the origin of it all.

a flag represents a country.each and every symbol as well as colour symbolises something.
scientefically speaking it was invented to know the direction of the wind and some symbol etc. was made on it signifing that it belonged to some paticular kingdom or king.
later on it was related to be a thing of pride and something which should be respected.
