That depends on what you are planning to move with? Are you going to be shipping all of your furnishings to the UK with you, or buying there? Note that you will most likely need to replace all of your appliances since they run on 220 there. Also, your TV or VCR won't work (PAL in the UK versus NTSC here), and your DVD player won't work (different region, unless you are going to keep coming back to the states to purchase DVD's).

That's going to depend upon so many factors that it's impossible to say.

First off, you're not just going to "move to Britain" like you'd move to Boston. You'll need a resident visa and work permit first. You'll need the job first to get those. It's pretty similar to our H1-B visa program here. You have to have a skill that a local doesn't have and can't easily get. Or be a senior manager with a large multi-national company.

What it will cost in the UK depends upon where you want to live. Prices in London make LA look like a deep-discount outlet. A tiny flat in a desireable area can run thousands per month.

Prices will drop as you head out of London, especially as you head north. However, as prices drop, so will any job opportunities -- especially for a Yank ex-pat.

You'll need to get rid of most of your belongings. Most American furniture is too big for British homes. None of your appliances will work -- 110v vs 240v. TV is totally different. You might be able to bring your car, but driving a LHD on the left is a pain and it will cost you more to insure and maintain. If it's a gas-guzzler, consider that fuel is about $7.00 a gallon in the UK now.

Do your homework so you'll know what you're up against. I lived in the UK for nearly 7 years and return often in my work. Loved every minute of it and would move back if given the chance -- and enough £££. But if you just show up at HM Immigration and expect to say, you'll be put on the next flight home.
