Actually, it is answered in the opening scene.

Clarence was a clockmaker. He had an affinity for the Tom Sawyer book.

I believe the only thing mentioned about his past was a strong connection to Tom Sawyer. Read it and consider the kind of message it sends--symbolism. The book was very symbolic. Figure out what it mean and how with his personality he bonds with it. It was the only thing he carried, so it had great significance. Anyhow, I hope I helped, but his profession is omitted.
